Meet Hernan Donahue

So me? I’m Hernan, Hernan Donahue, a mechanical engineer with a CWENG certification and over 20 years of experience in fabrication. My journey into welding began with my family’s business, Donahue’s Welding, which my father started when I was just a child. While he introduced me to this field, the long hours and tough working conditions didn’t initially ignite a passion in me.

Despite this, my interest in machinery and automation led me to pursue a MECHANICAL ENGINEERING degree at the University of Utah. It was during my time at university that I began to see the potential for innovation and creativity in welding.

After graduating, I joined a startup FABRICATION company and worked there for 3 years. During this time, I had immense learning opportunities and absorbed everything I could. With my experience and degree, I became a Certified Welding Engineer (CWENG) through the American Welding Society (AWS), which gave my career a new direction. This certification further fueled my dream of upgrading my family’s business and running it alongside my father.

However, I needed more experience and to learn different types of welding. So, I took on more challenging welding engineering and inspection jobs at big companies like Honeywell and Caterpillar. Over the next decade, I mastered Arc, Stick, TIG, MIG, SMAW, FCAW, and Plasma welding techniques.

A Welder’s Journey

In 2012, when I was ready, I took a leap of faith and left my job to pursue my ETERNAL DREAM. However, by this time, my father had retired, and the old welding shop had been shut down. Undeterred, I purchased modern fabrication equipment for welding, cutting, grinding, and other processes, and restarted the business from our garage.

Now, I have a dedicated team of 16 professional welding engineers and technicians working with me in our 2000 sq. ft. workshop. We have a strict no-compromise policy on quality, ensuring that every project we undertake is executed with precision and excellence.

My father’s retirement and the closure of the welding shop were pivotal moments for me. His dedication and hard work inspired me to strive for excellence in everything I do. His support and guidance continue to drive me forward as I follow in his footsteps.

Passion for Welding Helmets

Among all types of fabrication gear, I have always been particularly fascinated with welding helmets. When I started welding in 2002, I could only use fixed-shade lenses. However, as technology advanced, so did our equipment. Now, we work with a range of helmets, from auto-darkening helmets to smart camera hoods and even respiratory helmets.

Why I Created ProWeldingHelmets.com

After years of working in fabrication, I noticed something frustrating.

Many welding equipment websites recommended nearly every helmet they reviewed. Expensive models were always “the best.” Budget helmets were often dismissed without explanation. Technical specifications were copied directly from manufacturer catalogs, while very little attention was paid to how those helmets actually behaved during welding.

REAL welders know better.

A helmet can advertise an impressive 1/25,000-second switching speed, but if its sensors struggle to detect a low-amperage TIG arc or flicker when sunlight hits from behind, those numbers become meaningless.

Similarly, a helmet may have a huge viewing window, but if the optics introduce distortion or poor color accuracy, weld QUALITY can suffer over an entire day.

Those are the kinds of issues that only appear after spending real time behind the lens. So, I take every recommendation seriously. Before I recommend a helmet, I ask myself a simple question: Would I confidently wear this helmet myself or recommend it to someone working beside me? If the answer is no, it doesn’t matter how much commission it pays. I won’t recommend it.

That’s why I launched ProWeldingHelmets.com.

Instead of publishing generic buying guides based entirely on specifications, my team and I evaluate helmets the same way we would if we were buying them for ourselves.

If a helmet impresses us, we’ll explain exactly why.

If it disappoints us, we’ll explain that too.

Our Philosophy

Our testing philosophy is built around four simple principles.

1. Safety Always Comes First

Nothing matters more than protecting a welder’s eyesight.

Before we evaluate comfort, appearance, features, or value, we first determine whether a helmet provides consistent protection during actual welding.

A helmet that performs inconsistently, misses arc starts, flickers during operation, or struggles with low-amperage welding immediately loses credibility in our eyes. No amount of extra features can compensate for unreliable eye protection.

2. Real Welding Beats Laboratory Numbers

Manufacturers often publish impressive specifications like reaction times, viewing area, weight, battery life, and optical ratings.

These specifications certainly matter, but they don’t always tell the complete story. For example, TWO helmets may both carry a 1/1/1/1 optical clarity rating, yet one offers noticeably better puddle visibility because of superior color reproduction.

Likewise, two helmets can claim identical switching speeds while behaving very differently during repeated arc starts. So, instead of trusting published specifications alone, we verify how each helmet performs during actual welding jobs.

3. Every Helmet Has Trade-Offs

One lesson I’ve learned after testing dozens of welding helmets is that perfection doesn’t exist. Some helmets prioritize comfort, others prioritize optical quality, and some offer excellent value.

Others justify their premium price through advanced lens technology.

Rather than pretending every helmet is perfect, we explain exactly where each model excels and where compromises exist. Our readers deserve balanced recommendations instead of marketing language.

4. Continuous Testing Never Stops

The welding industry changes every year. Manufacturers improve sensors, new lens technologies appear, headgear designs evolve, and battery systems become more efficient.

Because of that, our reviews are never considered permanently finished. As better helmets enter the market or existing models receive significant updates, we revisit our recommendations to ensure they still deserve their place.

Our goal isn’t simply to publish reviews. Our goal is to keep them accurate.

5. Compliance With Industry Standards

Safety is never an afterthought in our evaluations. Whenever applicable, we verify that the welding helmets we review meet recognized industry standards, including ANSI Z87.1, EN379, and other relevant safety and optical performance requirements. We also consider whether manufacturers follow guidance established by organizations such as OSHA and the American Welding Society (AWS) when designing and marketing their products.

While certifications alone don’t guarantee a great welding helmet, they provide an important baseline. Our hands-on testing goes a step further by evaluating how consistently each helmet performs in real-world welding conditions, helping ensure the gear we recommend delivers both dependable protection and practical performance.

Inside Donahue’s Welding Workshop

Most of our testing takes place inside Donahue’s Welding Workshop, where welding isn’t staged for photographs or performed only long enough to collect a few observations.

Helmets become part of our everyday work.

They are used while fabricating steel frames, repairing machinery, cutting plates, welding pipes, and completing many of the same jobs professional welders encounter every day.

Over time, this reveals characteristics that short demonstrations simply cannot.

We begin noticing things like:

Whether the headgear slowly loosens during long welding sessions.

If the shell remains comfortable after several hours.

How easily the controls can be adjusted while wearing gloves.

Whether the auto-darkening lens remains consistent throughout repeated welds.

How much neck fatigue develops after wearing the helmet for an entire shift.

Whether lens clarity changes as ambient lighting conditions change.

How well the shell resists scratches, heat, and workshop abuse.

Those practical observations often become far more valuable than any manufacturer’s specification.

Meet Our Testing Team

Although every review ultimately reflects my own conclusions, I don’t test helmets alone.

Testing is a collaborative effort involving experienced welders, certified welding engineers, and fabrication professionals who spend countless hours using welding helmets in real working environments.

Our team brings hands-on experience across a wide range of welding disciplines, allowing us to evaluate helmets in the environments they were designed for. Collectively, we’ve worked extensively with MIG (GMAW), TIG (GTAW), Stick (SMAW), Flux-Cored (FCAW), and plasma cutting, as well as general fabrication, structural steel work, equipment repair, and industrial maintenance.

This diverse background helps us understand the unique demands of each welding process and assess how a helmet performs under different real-world applications rather than relying solely on manufacturer specifications.

Different welding processes place different demands on a helmet. For example, a helmet that performs perfectly during MIG welding may struggle to detect extremely low-amperage TIG arcs.

Likewise, helmets that feel comfortable during short repairs may become noticeably front-heavy during all-day fabrication work. Testing across multiple welding applications allows us to identify these differences before making recommendations.

I’m fortunate to work alongside an experienced team that plays an important role in every evaluation we conduct.

Oliver Freling, our Workshop Manager and Support Analyst, is a Certified Welding Engineer (CWENG) with more than eight years of hands-on experience in welding, cutting, and managing fabrication projects. Oliver oversees much of our workshop testing, helping ensure every helmet is evaluated using a consistent, repeatable, and technically sound methodology.

Liam Clyborne, our Lead Fabricator and Certified Welder, brings over a decade of practical welding experience across plasma cutting, TIG, MIG, Stick, and Flux-Cored welding. Because Liam spends countless hours on real fabrication projects, he often notices the subtle details that only become apparent after extended use, such as comfort, weight distribution, headgear stability, and overall usability in demanding work environments.

Supporting our core testing team are several other skilled professionals who contribute throughout the evaluation process. Ethan Brooks, one of our senior welders, specializes in structural steel fabrication and heavy-duty MIG and Stick welding, while Noah Carter, another experienced welder, focuses on precision TIG work and custom metal fabrication.

Keeping our workshop running smoothly is Ryan Mitchell, our shop electrician, who maintains welding machines, plasma cutters, compressors, and electrical systems to ensure consistent testing conditions. Behind the scenes, our workshop assistants help prepare materials, organize equipment, document observations, photograph products, and record test results, allowing every evaluation to be carried out efficiently and consistently.

Together, Oliver, Liam, Ethan, Noah, Ryan, I, and the rest of our workshop staff bring decades of combined fabrication, engineering, and technical experience to every review we publish.

By blending engineering expertise with practical, day-to-day welding experience, we’re able to EVALUATE each helmet from multiple perspectives and provide honest, unbiased, and experience-driven recommendations backed by real-world testing rather than marketing claims.
